CBD and Sunburn
Sunburn is caused when the body is exposed to too much sun, resulting in hot, red, sore skin. The severity of sunburn can vary from person to person depending on their skin sensitivity and the exposure to the sun. Extended sun exposure can result in sunstroke, blistered skin and also dehydration.
UV (Ultraviolet) rays come from the sun, it is a form of electromagnetic radiation and when the body is exposed to these rays, it can cause harm on the body. Exposure to these UV rays can cause damage to the body
The sun gives off UV rays, which can cause cell damage. This can result in ageing skin, increased risk of skin cancer and can also cause damage to the eyes. The most effective way of reducing UV exposure is by using a sun lotion with an SPF of 15 and over as well as wearing UV protective eyewear.
Sunburn can be a painful side effect of too much sun exposure. The symptoms of sun burn can last for up to 7 days and then could be followed by skin peeling. Treatment for sun burn can be done at home, using the following:
- Cold showers (however ensuring that body temperature doesn’t get too low)
- Keep applying sun cream and after sun, containing ingredients such as aloe vera
- Drinking water to prevent dehydration
- Taking painkillers to help with pain
- Keeping sunburnt skin covered with loose clothing
- Spend more time in the shade than in direct sunlight.
When the body is burnt by the sun, the body releases anti-inflammatory cells to try and reduce and repair the damaged caused by the sun. This anti-inflammatory response by the body can cause swelling, itchiness, blistering and skin pressure.
CBD contains anti-oxidants and also has anti-inflammatory properties. These anti-inflammatory properties may help to reduce swelling and inflammation that is caused by sunburn. This could then reduce the level of discomfort caused by these side effects, whilst potentially reducing the redness of the skin. Another unfortunate side effect of sunburn is skin peeling. This often happens several days after sunburn and is a result of cell damage. It is important to not tug or peel the skin to yourself, as this can lead to infection.
Overall, it is incredibly important to wear sunscreen to protect the skin from the sun’s UV rays, including cooler parts of the year. Wearing a sun lotion over SPF 15 is recommended to try and protect the skin from these harmful rays and reduce the risk of some types of cancer and also ageing skin cells. Using a combination of natural ingredients such as aloe vera and natural yogurt may also help to ease the dreaded side effects of too much sunshine.
