CBD Oil and Sciatica

CBD Oil and Sciatica

Sciatica is a nagging and painful condition that often affects your lower back and lower legs. It is estimated that at least 40% of people will experience sciatica at a certain point in their lives. Despite the high number of people suffering from the condition, there is no definitive treatment for the condition.

Most sciatica patients live on over the counter pain relievers and prescription muscle relaxants to reduce pain and ease the muscle spasms, respectively.

In some cases, antidepressants might also be prescribed for patients with severe back pain. The intensity of pain can be acute or chronic. In acute cases, the episode might last up to two weeks and cause numbness after the pain has subsided.

To alleviate the pain and discomfort, Sciatica patients often consider other methods of treatments like physical therapy, chiropractic, massage treatments, and strength and flexibility workouts.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a painful condition that is often related to the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. Its roots start in the lower back and extend through the buttocks and down the lower limbs.

Sciatica related pain often affects one side of the body and extends from the lower back through the back of the thigh and down the leg. For some patients, the pain extends to the foot and toes.

Sciatica pain varies. For some, it is a dull, constant pain that often goes away without any need for surgery. For others, the pain can be debilitating and irritating and often gets worse. For patients that experience weakness in their lower limbs and upper thighs and loss of bladder and bowel control, immediate medical attention is required.

What Causes Sciatica?

Sciatica is a result of the irritation of the roots of the sciatic nerve. The common causes of this irritation include:

  • Narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back (Lumbar Spinal Stenosis).
  • Pinching of the sciatic nerve often by a herniated disk in the spine.
  • On overgrowth on the vertebrae.
  • As a result of damage by diseases like a tumour or diabetes.

As you grow older, there are higher chances of suffering from sciatica. People suffering from obesity and diabetes are also at a higher risk of suffering from sciatica.

Other risk factors include blue-collar occupations and prolonged sitting, both of which require intensive use of the spine.

Symptoms of Sciatica

To determine whether you are suffering from sciatica, you should look out for various symptoms which include:

  • Pain in either the right or left leg that gets worse when you sit
  • Hip pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Weakness, numbness or difficulty when moving your leg or foot
  • Shooting pain that makes it hard to stand up
  • Constant pain on one side of your rear
  • A burning or tingling feeling in your leg

If you suspect you are suffering from sciatica, it’s advisable to schedule an appointment with your medical doctor for further assessment and proper diagnosis.

What is CBD?

CBD is short for Cannabidiol – a naturally occurring chemical found in the hemp plant. CBD is one of the many cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant and a close cousin of THC.

In the recent past, CBD has gained a lot of popularity and is used for a variety of reasons, among them nutritional benefits.

CBD manufacturers have come up with different CBD products made from CBD isolate, broad-spectrum CBD, or full-spectrum CBD.

CBD products made from CBD isolate only contain the CBD, while those made from broad-spectrum contain other cannabinoids and terpenes, including regulated trace elements of THC. For users who prefer to avoid ingesting any THC, there are full-spectrum CBD products that contain the terpenes and cannabinoids without the THC.

How CBD Works in the Body

Inadequate information on how CBD functions in the body has led to a lot of mystery and misinformation.

CBD works through the Endocannabinoid system, which exists in the bodies of all mammals. The endocannabinoid system has a system of cell receptors and enzymes that help to break down the CBD into simpler compounds that can be absorbed into the body.

Once introduced into the body, the CBD is absorbed into the bloodstream and sent to different receptor cell sites in the brain, liver, immune cells and the liver, among others.

At these receptors cells, the CBD is broken down with the help of enzymes into simpler compounds then absorbed into the body. CBD, in conjunction with the ECS and different organs, works to restore balance and homeostasis in the body.

Pain relief

One of the effects of sciatica is severe back pain. CBD has strong pain relief properties. These properties are vital in assisting in pain management.

Anti-inflammation

In some cases, sciatica is caused by a bulging or a slipped disc. Inflammation in the affected area can cause aggravation and worsen the pain. CBD has powerful anti-inflammatory compounds. Some of the CBD products like CBD capsules contain additional natural ingredients that also have anti-inflammatory properties.

Other CBD properties like relaxation can also help to reduce body depression and tightness as well as reduce strain on the sciatic nerve.

CBD Tinctures and Capsules

There are different types of CBD oil products that you can use. The products you choose largely depend on the reason for taking CBD, as well as your preference.

The most preferred options are CBD tinctures and CBD oils, which are taken sublingually and can be added to foods and drinks, and CBD capsules and tablets which are taken orally.

You can also use topical CBD products like CBD balms to massage problem areas or CBD massage oils even though these are not as effective as tinctures or capsules.

CBD cream

CBD creams are topical options with a variety of properties that can assist with skincare and pain management.

CBD creams designed for sciatica have a variety of relaxing and calming ingredients that enhance the pain relief properties of CBD.

Possible Effects

One of the reasons why CBD is highly preferred is because it's all-natural. It has limited side effects and very low toxicity. However, it is still strongly recommended that you consult with a physician before you start taking CBD.

This is particularly important if you’re on any other type of medication or treatment plan to make sure there are no negative interactions.
