Can You Overdose on CBD?

Can You Overdose on CBD?

There are so many myths and misconceptions about CBD oil, making it difficult to distinguish the fact from the fiction. Most users have a hard time determining how CBD oil will make them feel and if there are any risks based on the information published online.

Considering that CBD is commonly associated with THC, the greatest concern that many new CBD users have is whether they can overdose on CBD and what happens to them when they accidentally take more than the required amount of CBD.

What is CBD Oil?

Let's first start by determining what CBD is and, most importantly, what it isn't. CBD is a natural chemical compound in the class of cannabinoids found in marijuana and hemp plants. Although CBD is in the same class as THC, it is not psychoactive, meaning it doesn't cause a high. It is highly revered for its touted health benefits and has continued to grow in popularity. It’s also important to point out that CBD doesn’t show up in a drug test.

Also, unlike THC, CBD is entirely legal in the UK as long as the plants are grown and processed as per the laid down procedures and laws.

How Does CBD Affect Your Body?

CBD has numerous effects on the body. It works by interacting with the Endocannabinoid System, which is naturally present in the body.

CBD can have numerous effects, including pain and inflammation relief and reducing anxiety. CBD oil can also regulate sleep, among other benefits.

How CBD affects your body and mind also depends on how much CBD you take. When taken in small quantities, CBD can make you feel alert and increase focus. When taken in large quantities, CBD can make you feel drowsy and sleepy.

Is it Possible to Overdose on CBD?

The direct answer is no. CBD has very few side effects and is considered non-toxic to humans. So far, there have been no known reports of fatalities caused by CBD overdose or illnesses.

It is also doubtful that any user could overdose on CBD oil. The packaging of the CBD oil comes in a bottle with a dropper that is easy to administer.

According to a report by WHO on a study conducted on monkeys, an extremely high dose of CBD oil is considered in excess of 30mg of CBD per KG taken orally for 90 days in monkeys. For adults, that translates to taking the entire CBD oil tincture every day for 90 days. Even at these high doses, the WHO couldn't find any physiological and biochemical effects on the test subjects.

What Happens If You Take Too Much CBD Oil?

Although it's almost impossible to overdose on CBD oil, taking too much might result in undesirable side effects. CBD oil is typically well-tolerated by a majority of users. But when taken in large quantities, it can present various side effects that include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Drowsiness
  • Sedation
  • Diarrhoea
  • Changes in appetite
  • A temporary drop in blood pressure

How Much CBD is Too Much?

The amount of CBD you should take depends on your weight, metabolism, and various other factors that are unique to you. It's always recommended to follow the serving sizes indicated on the CBD oil bottle if you're unsure of how much CBD oil you should take. Always start slow and gradually increase the amount of CBD oil you take if you can’t feel the difference.

Can Pets Overdose on CBD Oil?

Accidental CBD oil overdose is also a concern among pet owners. As CBD oil pet products become increasingly popular, pet owners want to make sure their furry friends can benefit from the cannabinoids and avoid any drastic effects.
