Turkey Tail Mushroom Dosage

Turkey Tail Mushroom Dosage

If you’re thinking about how much of Turkey Tail mushroom you should take, you’ve most likely done the research, you know what Turkey Tail mushrooms are capable of, and you're eager to get started on them. The only challenge is you're not sure how much to begin with. It's a challenge most people have when starting with functional mushrooms because they don't have a standard serving for all people. So it's up to you to find what works for you.

What to Consider When Determining Turkey Tail Dosage

How much Turkey Tail you should take depends on several factors. Carefully weighing these factors brings you closer to knowing how much of the mushroom you should take for the best effects.

Form of turkey tail mushroom

Like other functional mushrooms, Turkey's tail comes in different forms. You can find it as a whole mushroom or a concentrated extract that comes as a powder or capsule.

As a whole mushroom that you can cook, the concentration of elements is not high, and you can eat the mushrooms to your fill. However, concentrated extracts require more caution. You should only take a few grams daily to meet your nutritional requirements and experience the therapeutic benefits.

The reason for consuming Turkey Tail

Not everyone consumes Turkey Tail for the same reason. It’s true we are all attracted by its unique benefits and nutritional composition. But some people only take it as a supplement and a preventative measure while others take it for support with conditions they are struggling with.

If you're taking Turkey Tail as a supplement, your daily quota is not as high as a person taking it for support with a condition. You must match your intake to the reason for taking the mushroom supplement.

Can You Overdose on Turkey Tail Mushrooms?

Despite the many benefits functional mushrooms have, many people approach them cautiously because of the reputation that poisonous mushrooms have created. That’s why the question of overdosing on Turkey Tail and other types of mushrooms is common.

The good news is, Turkey Tail mushrooms are not harmful, and there's no way you can overdose on them. But you're not entirely in the clear. There are a few adverse effects to be mindful of and another reason you should only consume the recommended amount. These include;

  • Darkening of the stool
  • Diarrhoea
  • Bloating
  • Gas
  • Darkening of the fingernails

If these side effects occur, they are usually mild and easy to deal with. You just need to adjust your dosage, and everything will return to normal.

General Guidelines of Turkey Tail Mushroom Dosage

There's no set amount of Turkey Tail mushroom supplements that works for everyone. However, you can find the ideal serving for you by taking time and starting with a lower dosage.

If you’re taking Turkey Tail supplements to improve your overall health and well-being, as little as two or three grams of powder per day is enough. This serving contains all the active ingredients like flavonoids, phenols and prebiotics the body needs to function throughout the day. Also, at three grams, if there are any side effects, they will only be minor and mild.

Another general rule of thumb is to start with a low dosage, especially for newcomers. This applies even when you're taking Turkey Tail for support with a medical condition. Starting with a low dosage gives your body time to get used to the supplement and minimises the chances of side effects. You can gradually increase your intake after observing your response and effects.

Turkey Tail Doses for Various Purposes

Because of the versatile wellness and therapeutic benefits of Turkey Tail mushrooms, people take them for various reasons, and each reason has its recommended intake.

Turkey Tail dosage for cancer

Turkey Tail mushrooms are thought to have incredible anticancer properties. In Asia, they are used as part of the cancer treatment process along with chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery. Turkey Tail mushrooms may provide support for various types of cancers, including colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, lung cancer, and colon cancer, among others.

The recommended dosage here is about 3mg of Turkey Tail mushroom daily. However, the dose is not limited to 3g per day. It varies from one person to the other. Some cancer patients take as much as 9mg per day.

Turkey Tail dosage for Alzheimer’s disease

Turkey Tail mushrooms may have some neuroprotective properties that reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as we age. The mushroom could potentially prevent the disease and help patients already living with the disease manage the symptoms of the condition.

There's no precise intake for patients living with Alzheimer's. But, one research used a 200mg/kg dose administered orally, which had positive results. If uncertain, you can begin with the same 3g per day and slowly adjust according to how you feel.

Turkey Tail dosage for Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a common condition among the elderly. It’s characterised by reduced bone thickness, making them more likely to break or fracture. Studies have worked with varying doses of the mushroom to achieve positive results.

In one study, an oral dose of 100mg/kg was administered over 28 days. This showed improved bone thickness and density. In another study, 1g/kg of Turkey Tail mushroom extract was administered over the same period with similar results.

Turkey Tail dosage for pain management

A lot of these conditions have pain as the main symptom. Turkey Tail mushrooms have been shown to reduce pain with their powerful analgesic effects. The mushroom has been found to reduce morphine-induced pain hypersensitivity at a dose of 200microgram per kg for three weeks. But the ideal dosage here depends on the level of pain you’re experiencing.

Although some conditions may require a higher Turkey Tail mushroom dose, we always recommend starting low and building upwards. You reduce the chances of side effects and give your body enough time to get used to the new elements and nutrients.
